I read the reviews and thought it was a good choice. I was expectations were more than met. Excellent food, service and atmosphere! Not inexpensive but well worth it!

Amazing Anniversary Dinner

Amazing Anniversary Dinner

My wife and I came here visited here this past weekend to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, and we couldn't have been more pleased with the food, the service and the overall ambiance. Adrienne waited on us and was fantastic. As first-timers to the restaurant, she went over the menu with us in detail and pointed out some of the options she would recommend after hearing what we liked to eat. We started with the mussels which were very tender and had an incredibly flavorful wine sauce. Adrienne highly recommended both the moonfish and the bone-in rib-eye as entrees, and she was spot-on. Both were prepared perfectly and were mouth-watering. For dessert, we shared a white chocolate and blackberry cheesecake that was delicious and a perfect ending to the meal. I would therefore highly recommend Mombo and can't wait to come back again and again.

Yelp Review - Cory B 7.6.15

We decided to take an impromptu trip up to Portsmouth for the night and were torn between a few different restaurants based on their Yelp reviews.  We decided to go to Mombo because it seemed different than the other restaurants in Portsmouth, but also reminiscent of some of our other favorite restaurants in New England, including Gibbet Hill Grill in Groton and Bittersweet Farm in Westport.

I am so happy we made this decision!  The service was friendly and attentive and the food.  First and foremost, the charcuterie plate (with cheese) is one of the best we've ever had.  Luckily we're two big people so we could handle it, but this is a plate for more than 2 people.  Everything about it was spectacular.  For our meals, I got the short ribs and my partner got a pork chop (which was recommended by our waiter).  Both were phenomenal.  You get to eat amazing food in an old general store that's been restored and converted into this beautiful restaurant.

It was truly a memorable experience and I look forward to going back.  In fact, when I got back to work (in the Boston area) and talked to coworkers about it, several had gone and said that it is one of their favorite spots in Portsmouth!  Highly recommended.

Portsmouth Gem

Portmsouth Gem
What I love about Mombo is that it's the complete package. The food is exceptional, the service is great, and it feels comfortable enough for a casual dinner or special enough for a special occasion.
We live about an hour away from Portsmouth, so we don't get there often enough. We have been to Mombo twice, and both experiences were fabulous. The food changes with the seasons, but some items (Wagu Hangar Steak, Crab-stuffed Flounder) are on the regular menu. We find the entire dining experience to be wonderful, and we know that we want to come here again...and again! Mombo also has a very gifted pastry chef who is adept at creating unusual desserts (Black Forest Creme Brulee, anyone?) and breads. Don't miss this gem of a restaurant!

Wedding Reception of Our Dreams

Wedding Reception of Our Dreams

My husband and I were married in early October of 2013, at Mombo. From the moment we stepped in for our initial visit with Tom Perron, the General Manager, we were enchanted. It was everything we were looking for for our perfect wedding: New England charm, amazing food, in the heart of downtown Portsmouth. And the cheerful and helpful employees were just the cherry on top.

We worked with Casey Syvertsen, the Special Events Manager, to plan all the details from timing to centerpieces to menu. She was absolutely AMAZING. She was so willing and pleasant that we felt like we were working with an old friend. She even answered all of my (numerous) e-mails that were full of detailed questions and nit-picky timeline options. And she answered them quickly and thoroughly.

The reception went off without a hitch (pun intended) and the staff was wonderful. The space was perfect for our group and everyone mingled and danced the night away. The centerpieces and other details were set up perfectly, and we were so in awe as we walked around and saw how everything came together. They made it so easy for us to relax and just know that we were in good hands.

The food was a hot topic of the evening. We were told that it was the best food anyone had ever had at a wedding! Five stars; Two-thumbs up! My husband and I made sure to have time to sit down and eat the wonderful meal. And we couldn’t believe how many options we were given and the level of creativity. From macaroni and cheese spoons and crab wontons, to duck confit risotto and asiago mashed potatoes, to horseradish crusted prime rib and cheddar-prosciutto chicken…All we kept saying was, “Yum!” They even packed a to-go bag for us to enjoy back at the hotel!

All in all, our wedding really was our dream wedding. It was exactly what we wanted and Mombo made it all happen without a worry. Their prices were competitive and there was a ton of unexpected value. A big thank you to Tom and Casey and the rest of the wonderful, smiling staff. We look forward to seeing you again soon when we stop by for dinner!

Best Wedding Dinner Ever

Best Wedding Dinner Ever

Granted, the wedding meal category isn't known for culinary delights, though Mombo certainly outpaces all of the others. It was good enough to prompt us to return for a dinner not related to an event with a large group of people who have to be served all at the very same time.

The salad was lightly dressed and lovely to look at. The desserts were also works of art and if it wasn't gauche to do so, I would have scooped entire platters of them onto my little plate. Good thing I only had a little plate or some might have gone without.

The building is small enough to be comfortable and cozy, though not cramped. It is off one of the main streets in Portsmouth, so might be missed by some. That would be a mistake. Don't miss this wonderful little place. I will be there again soon.
