Well done!!

 Seated via Yelp Reservations

I visited Mombo for the first time tonight. We were a party of 4. We had reservations for 7 but arrived at 6:30. We were seated right away in what I thought, the best table  in the house. A curved cushioned bench seat with a heated lamp over our table. Perfect for a chilly winter night. We were seated by Tom who was a complete pleasure  throughout the evening. Our waitress, Carmen, was a total sweetheart. She had a wonderful personality!
Our meal was superb. Appetizers of the Pork Four and Deviled  eggs, delicious!! For our main meal my sister and I had the strip steaks, my husband, general tso's sirloin tips and my brother in law, lamb osso bucco. 5 stars.
The ambiance is wonderful as well. Beautiful location and a very warm feeling.
Go! You won't regret it. Thank you Tom and Carmen! Well done!!

Amazing Private Event

Privet Dining

I hosted a private event last Thursday night at Mombo. It was probably the #1 or #2 meal experience I've had in Portsmouth in 4 years. The owner Tom and the events coordinator Catherine were very patient with me during the reservation and menu selection process. Great ambiance. Restaurant looked fantastic. They really acted like they appreciated us being there.

I had a great dinner at Mombo! My reservation was originally later in the evening, but my early evening plans changed. When I called to see if they could squeeze us in earlier they said they could seat us right away. Great!

In the online reservation I made a note that my husband and I were celebrating our anniversary. Most restaurants seem to ignore those things, but both the hostess and our waiter wished us happy anniversary right away. And they wrote happy anniversary on our dessert plate in chocolate, which was also nice.

We shared the lobster flatbread as an appetizer. It was so good I would have happily eaten it as my entree. The flatbread had a great chew to it, and the sauce drizzled on top was delicious.

For entrees, I had the rainbow trout en papillote on our waiter's recommendation. The fish was perfectly flaky and came in a delicious, buttery lemon aioli. My husband got the huge bone-in pork chop. The seasoning and sauce were fantastic, and I snuck several bites of the corn and bacon succotash.

For dessert, we chose the Italian rum cake creme brûlée because it seemed like the most unique option on the menu. It was basically a little Neapolitan cake with a layer of dense chocolate cream, rum cake, and strawberry coulie on top of a creme brûlée. It. Was. Outstanding.

We had a lovely evening at Mombo, and will definitely come back.

Portsmouth Gem

Portmsouth Gem
What I love about Mombo is that it's the complete package. The food is exceptional, the service is great, and it feels comfortable enough for a casual dinner or special enough for a special occasion.
We live about an hour away from Portsmouth, so we don't get there often enough. We have been to Mombo twice, and both experiences were fabulous. The food changes with the seasons, but some items (Wagu Hangar Steak, Crab-stuffed Flounder) are on the regular menu. We find the entire dining experience to be wonderful, and we know that we want to come here again...and again! Mombo also has a very gifted pastry chef who is adept at creating unusual desserts (Black Forest Creme Brulee, anyone?) and breads. Don't miss this gem of a restaurant!

Wedding Reception of Our Dreams

Wedding Reception of Our Dreams

My husband and I were married in early October of 2013, at Mombo. From the moment we stepped in for our initial visit with Tom Perron, the General Manager, we were enchanted. It was everything we were looking for for our perfect wedding: New England charm, amazing food, in the heart of downtown Portsmouth. And the cheerful and helpful employees were just the cherry on top.

We worked with Casey Syvertsen, the Special Events Manager, to plan all the details from timing to centerpieces to menu. She was absolutely AMAZING. She was so willing and pleasant that we felt like we were working with an old friend. She even answered all of my (numerous) e-mails that were full of detailed questions and nit-picky timeline options. And she answered them quickly and thoroughly.

The reception went off without a hitch (pun intended) and the staff was wonderful. The space was perfect for our group and everyone mingled and danced the night away. The centerpieces and other details were set up perfectly, and we were so in awe as we walked around and saw how everything came together. They made it so easy for us to relax and just know that we were in good hands.

The food was a hot topic of the evening. We were told that it was the best food anyone had ever had at a wedding! Five stars; Two-thumbs up! My husband and I made sure to have time to sit down and eat the wonderful meal. And we couldn’t believe how many options we were given and the level of creativity. From macaroni and cheese spoons and crab wontons, to duck confit risotto and asiago mashed potatoes, to horseradish crusted prime rib and cheddar-prosciutto chicken…All we kept saying was, “Yum!” They even packed a to-go bag for us to enjoy back at the hotel!

All in all, our wedding really was our dream wedding. It was exactly what we wanted and Mombo made it all happen without a worry. Their prices were competitive and there was a ton of unexpected value. A big thank you to Tom and Casey and the rest of the wonderful, smiling staff. We look forward to seeing you again soon when we stop by for dinner!

Best Wedding Dinner Ever

Best Wedding Dinner Ever

Granted, the wedding meal category isn't known for culinary delights, though Mombo certainly outpaces all of the others. It was good enough to prompt us to return for a dinner not related to an event with a large group of people who have to be served all at the very same time.

The salad was lightly dressed and lovely to look at. The desserts were also works of art and if it wasn't gauche to do so, I would have scooped entire platters of them onto my little plate. Good thing I only had a little plate or some might have gone without.

The building is small enough to be comfortable and cozy, though not cramped. It is off one of the main streets in Portsmouth, so might be missed by some. That would be a mistake. Don't miss this wonderful little place. I will be there again soon.
